The Aim of Photorejuvenation Treatment

The primary aim of photorejuvenation is to bring about wound healing and new collagen formation, therefore, techniques that induce a dermal wound without epidermal ablation should lead to cosmetic improvement of photodamage. The mechanism required for non-ablative photorejuvenation is thermal denaturation of collagen associated with the unwinding of the triple helical structure of the collagen molecule.

Induce Wound-Healing

At around 70 oC to 75 oC the damage to dermal collagen will lead to a wound-healing reaction which leads to the removal of damaged elastotic material and an increase in new collagen formation. However, this is the goal of photorejuvenation and will result in a fresher, healthier appearance to the skin. In addition, helping with pigmentation, broken veins, fine lines and wrinkles. Non-ablative treatments are more suited to fine lines and wrinkles only as the degree of collagen remodelling is not as great as that seen with the ablative techniques. It is ideal for those seeking minimal ‘downtime’ and minimal to no wound injuries with little or no pre and post-treatment complications.

IPL releases short pulses of filtered light. This light is absorbed by the high concentration of melanin found within freckles, sun spots and liver spots. The rapid absorption of light energy heats the melanin and due to the heat breaks down the melanin-rich cells. After that, mild crusting will occur, usually sloughing off within 2 weeks.
