Telomeres? Are these contributing to us ageing?

You may not have heard of telomeres but they play an important role in the ageing process. Telomeres are essentially ‘protective caps’ on the end of our chromosomes and they are the part of chromosomes that control ageing. As we grow older, these protective caps become shorter and shorter due to cell division. A lack of exercise, stress and a poor diet can shorten telomeres even further. So, how do they contribute to the ageing process and what can we do to protect them? How do they contribute to the ageing process? Essentially, as telomeres become shorter and shorter, they become too short to divide any further, which makes them either; inactive, causes them to die, or, to shorten even further which is a dangerous process. As cells lose telomeres, it results in the body slowing down. The shortening process has also been linked to cancer and other diseases. Studies have shown that those with shorter telomeres have a greater risk of dying than those with longer ones. We also need to consider telomerase – this is an enzyme that lengthens and protects telomeres, however, levels of telomerase are reduced with constant cell division. How can we protect telomeres? There are a few things we can do; Reduce stress levels – stress is a known factor for contributing to the shortening, thus promoting the ageing process.

There are a few things we can do;

  • Reduce stress levels – stress is a known factor for contributing to the shortening, thus promoting the ageing process. By controlling stress and reducing our stress levels, we can help to lengthen them.
  • Participate in regular exercise – exercising regularly not only increases your energy levels and boosts your mood, it also helps to lengthen your telomeres. Studies have shown that those who partake in regular exercise have longer telomeres than those who don’t.
  • Eat a balanced diet – consuming a diet rich in antioxidants and vitamins can prevent cell damage. This means looking and feeling younger!

Client Testimonial: “Jodie is extremely professional and knowledgeable throughout the IPL treatment sessions. She explains the process and what to expect so that you are put at ease from the first consultation. During my IPL sessions, Jodie marked up the areas and avoided any moles or damaged skin, then preps using the cooler handle before a light shot. The light shot itself really doesn’t hurt, it’s done in seconds. The fact the skin is cooled first makes this an easy process to tolerate. I genuinely didn’t feel in pain at all and Jodie applied a lovely aloe balm to soothe the skin straight away. If anything I felt my appointments were more of a therapy as I knew I would be hair free come my holiday. After each session I came away feeling the progress getting better and better and by week 5 there was hardly any hair growth. I didn’t feel the need to shave anymore. I felt more confident and there is much less maintenance at home now which means I have more time for other things. I would highly recommend IPL hair removal by SkinBase and with Jodie as she made me feel at ease from the moment I asked about it and the difference it makes is life changing for someone who wasn’t so confident in her skin. I can’t wait for Summer and my holiday. Thanks Jodie & SkinBase.”
